Welcome to my first Odyssey blog! My name is Kylie Pizzonia, and I am a junior at Sandia Prep. My odyssey project is looking into the mind of a serial killer (dark, I know). I have always been fascinated by what makes multiple murderers do what they do. I am going to use my time in Odyssey to look into various serial killers and their upbringings to try and find a common denominator as to why they kill. This month I have been doing a lot of reading from a book called Serial Killers by Peter Vronsky. This novel goes in depth into multiple serial killers cases and why there was an influx in serial killings in the 1970s. The book is a captivating read, and if you find yourself in need of a good book, I highly recommend it. After familiarizing myself with Vronsky’s theory, I understand his reasoning, but am also in disagreement. Vronsky blames the influx on the Manson murders as inspiration, but I do not agree. Charles Manson never killed anyone himself, he manipulated others into doing it for him. Therefore, if he was to blame for the rise in serial murders, we would have seen more people manipulating others into committing the murders. I have a theory (based on zero evidence, don’t quote me on this) that the rise of serial killings in the 70s is a result of those killers being brought up in the 40s and early 50s. They would have grown up in an extremely violent time, as WWII had just ended, and our country was very poor (having just come out of the Great Depression, and paying war expenses). Obviously not all children born in the 40s are serial killers, but I think it strange that the majority of the infamous serial killers from the 70s were born in the 40s. Ted Bundy was born in 1946, John Wayne Gacy in 1942, and Edmund Kemper in 1948 to name a few. It is a theory I am going to continue to follow throughout my project. The past couple weeks, I have been focusing on Ted Bundy. I have a YouTube video in the works that covers his crimes and what I believe to be the cause. Fingers crossed, it will be up soon. I watched all of the Ted Bundy tapes, and it is my main source. I will post a link to the video here once it is up. I would go into my beliefs as to why Bundy killed, but I’m not going to spoil the video, so you’re just going to have to watch it when it goes up. So far, I have really enjoyed my time as an Odyssey Scholar, and I am optimistic for the future of my project. Keep an eye out for my video!
